Three Problems with Every CLP on the Market until GunEze

Three Problems with Every CLP on the Market until we developed GunEze CLP!

As any shooter will tell you . . . cleaning guns can be a difficult, messy, and boring task.  We all cleaned our weapons for the first time, and we remember how excited we were.  For me, I was 12 years old.  My dad took me quail hunting at a beautiful preserve in South Jersey.  We had a great, productive introduction to my hunting life.  When we got home, we had a lot of delicious meat, but we also had some pretty dirty 12 gauge shotguns.

So then we did it – we laid out some towels, got out the cleaning kit, and ugh . . . the “cleaning solution.”  I remember it was oily, smelly, and seemed to be working against us.  My dad helped me through the steps, but I could tell this was for a purpose – this would be my job.  After the first shotgun, my dad was gone.  I later found out he was allergic to most CLPs.  So, I sprayed and bore snaked; I fished, scrubbed, and finally got the shotguns fairly clean.

I was excited to do it the first time and show my dad how clean I could get my shotgun.  But as I got older, it became more and more laborious.  I started to feel about it the way my dad did. I didn’t like it much.

When I went into the Army, cleaning the M16 was pretty much the same.  We used the same supplies, but again, we used an oily, smelly, poorly formulated clp that seemed to again work against us.  We thought the Drill Sergeants were messing with us – when we went to turn in our weapons, they invariably found carbon and we cued the “smoke session.”  That blame of the cleaning solution has been with me ever since.

Over the years that disdain for poorly made gun cleaners never left me.  I couldn’t understand why such an important part of firearm ownership was so poorly made.  But over the years, I started seeing claims for better products.

They said “spray some CLP onto your firearms parts, and, bang, you’re done.”   I tried – it wasn’t much better than what I had dealt with.

Herein lies the issue — many “CLP” gun lubes are simply trying to do too much with a poorly created formula. They are basically using WD40 with a few modifications to clean, lube, and protect.  This isn’t possible.

First Problem: The “C” is not formulated to work with the “L” and “P”

In “CLP” formulations, think about it . . . cleaning is a different function than lubrication and protection.  Cleaning pushes away and repels.

And many of the cleaners are doing a very good job on that either.

Second Problem: The “L” and “P” will attract debris as you shoot and lead to jamming.

Think about the issue – lubrication and protection is like a wax on a car – it coats.  Many CLPs are sticky/oily.  How do you think that works with dirt, grime, and carbon?  It doesn’t.

Third Problem: CLP is difficult to use, smells bad, and gets everywhere.

Not only are most CLPs very poor at “cleaning, lubrication, and protection,” they are just nasty to work with.  I remember as a kid the cleaner seemed to stay on my hands for weeks.  More recent experiences weren’t much better.  I absolutely hate the smell and oil mess.

GUNEZE was developed to fix these three issues.

Having worked in a factory producing pepper sprays, CS Gas, fire extinguishers, and other products for the US and Israeli militaries, I had the opportunity to speak with one of the managers, a former US Marine sniper, Mark Hillerman.  We spent about an hour talking about how much we love shooting.  We talked about what we love, but we talked about issues such as ammo prices, less access to ranges, and other shooting problems. But when we got to CLP, Mark said he couldn’t even talk about it.  He hated cleaning his weapons.

Mark and I got serious about the conversation and decided that we had the ability to fix this problem.  We bought different CLPsand tested them.  We had them analyzed by our on staff chemist.  We found what we liked and what we didn’t.  We could not find a CLP that functioned the way we wanted.  So we decided to make our own.  We talked about what we wanted.  We prioritized the following:

  1. Cleans great first.
  2. Lubes and protects as well any any other on the market.
  3. Less mess.
  4. Better smell.
  5. Reasonable price.

We got serious from there.  We decided to source expensive materials that would clean well first.  This is what made the solution oily and smell bad.  Mark had a great idea about the cleaning and oil viscosity problem.  We set off to test a process that one of our partners found that forces the solution to expand with foam.  This process, under a microscope, pushed the CLP into the tiny cracks in the metal of the weapon.  We were blown away at how it worked.  We were very happy.

This not only cleaned very effectively, but it made Guneze easy to work with.  We we’re very happy.  We also found that there was not a stickiness and we worked with the formula to maximize the ability for the oil to coat and lubricate, but not collect grime.  We worked hard on that formula!  It was a painstaking process to get the formula right.  But we did!

Well, the resulting benefits to our final formula were:

  •  Fewer jams
  •  More accurate shooting
  •  Reliability of moving parts
  •  Extended life of all parts
  •  Six to ten times more rounds fired between cleaning
  •  Increased muzzle velocity
